• Conducted usability assessments of chip and PIN keypad designs with people who have visual and dexterity impairments. This work involved engagement with users to ensure that an off the shelf Chip and PIN keypad was adapted to be accessible for as many people as possible.
• Assessed and compared the usability of three different mobile induction loops with customers with hearing impairments at various post offices.
• Worked with younger stroke survivors. This included preparing instructions for online training courses and reviewing website content to make sure that they were usable for people with aphasia and cognitive processing challenges. Ensured that the working environment was accessible for people with both cognitive and physical disabilities particularly one-sided paralysis and mobility difficulties.
• Tested the usability of a parcel measuring device.

Integrated Human Factors into the development of a Crossrail station. This involved site visits and regular meetings with the architect to provide an ergonomic review of the designs, highlight issues and collaboratively develop solutions and mitigations. Plans were reviewed and modified to ensure easy access from the train to the concourse for disabled passengers. Existing East London Line stations were visited and ergonomics tools used to engage with the users in order to develop an ergonomics review of the existing staff areas. Ergonomically sound aspects of the existing design and areas where improvements could be made were identified. This information was integrated into the new Custom House Station staff accommodation and station control facility development.

• Performed usability testing on a travel insurance application form.
• Conducted typeface legibility testing for signs to be used at a major airport.
• Provided behavioural/human factors input to the scheme design of the temporary signage on the pedestrian and cycle route between West Ham station and Victoria Park, south of the London Olympic Park. This work included working with the architects, extensive user and stakeholder engagement, running workshops and conducting site surveys. Best practice was researched, including accessibility, to develop the signage package.

• Assessed the Travel Centre counters at a major railway station. This involved performing an ergonomics review of the Travel Centre counters from both advisor and customer viewpoints. Issues with the design were identified and an evaluation of the anthropometric and musculoskeletal implications of the design was provided.
• Provided human factors analysis of office workers’ postures and workstation layouts with recommendations to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
• Provided human factors recommendations for a new sorting office at Royal Mail.

• Worked collaboratively to develop and provide support for a cultural change programme for the drivers and controllers of a tram service provider. This work involved examining existing culture in order to establish a baseline and identifying a suitable future culture along with the interventions required to achieve it, observing staff during operations and conducting informal interviews. Workshops were developed to enable staff to learn to identify human error risks, pinpoint mitigations and introduce a system to identify and deal with actions in a timely manner.
• Worked as part of a team to ensure that ergonomics/human factors was fully considered and incorporated into various areas of a tram service provider including driver cab assessments and control room workload and layout reviews.
• Conducted a human factors assessment of a heavy rail signal box with respect to the change in workload due to the re-doubling of the railway line. This work involved engaging with Signallers and Subject Matter Experts to conduct Task Analysis and assess workload.

Conducted ergonomic design reviews of various mobile phone portals including push email, social networking and viewing real time sport and news. This involved extensive user engagement with structured interviews and focus groups with a broad range of people in order to assess usability; feeding back findings as part of the design process while also providing solutions to ergonomics issues.

• Interviewed soldiers to capture perceptions of equipment performance.
• Provided human factors support for the integration of electronic equipment into a new vehicle for the British Army. Collaboratively developed an ergonomic review of proposed designs and worked with soldiers to establish their needs and requirements. This information was then fed back to the wider project team to ensure that the user was appropriately represented in the design process. Conducted trials of an existing vehicle with soldiers to ensure that the future technology would be usable and to reduce the risk of human error.
• Provided human factors analysis of anti-tank and anti-personnel landmine clearance equipment, giving recommendations for operability. Contributed to the development of a plan for the usability testing of a landmine clearance system.
• Assessed the human factors issues associated with docking a caisson. Carried out ergonomics and human reliability analyses of operator-machine interfaces. Engaged with users to identify environmental and stress factors affecting submariners and prepared technical reports. Provided ergonomic analysis of a submarine docking system.
